Fee Waiver Policy

Without a successful cost-recovery program the Bloomington Stock Center would not be able to maintain the size of collection or level of service that it now provides. Support from the U.S. government in the form of grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health allows everyone’s fees to be lower than they would otherwise be, but users of our services must provide a significant share of the cost of providing those services. We request that everyone do their fair share by paying their fees, but fees for stocks used in academic research will be waived under some circumstances.
     Waiver Guidelines
  • Total Fees Under $250
If stocks were used for academic research and you do not have grant or institutional funds with which to pay your fees, a waiver will be granted. Please provide a brief explanation of your situation with your request. With the exception of those using only a very few stocks, fees are waived on the assumption that you are seeking funding for your research and expect to be able to pay your fees in subsequent years.
  • Total Fees Over $250
Waivers of more than $250 or for more than 3 years are granted on a case-by-case basis. If you are in the unusual circumstance of being able to make good use of a large number of stocks in the absence of institutional or grant funding to support your research, please contact us about a waiver before you order stocks. In general, the cost of international postage is not waivable in this category.
  • Stocks for Teaching
Fees for institutional use (teaching stocks) are not waivable.
  • How to Request a Waiver
Request a 'Under $250' waiver by e-mail after you receive your Annual Use Statement in January of each year and before the end of February of that year. Please provide a brief explanation of your situation with your request. For larger numbers of stocks, contact us before you order.
  • Waivers Are Not Retroactive
If you do not request a waiver before the deadline and you do not pay the subsequent invoice, your account will be suspended and you will not be able to order additional stocks until the outstanding charges are paid.
