Price per stockPrice per stock is based on the total number of stocks ordered and shipped to an account in calendar year 2025 excluding replacements for dead on arrival stocks. The first 5 stocks are $28.80 each, and discounts are applied to numbers of stocks above certain thresholds: the 6th through the 100th stocks are $17.80 each. Stocks over 100 are $9.20 each. The number of stocks ordered for shipment is cumulative through the calendar year and need not be ordered all at once to obtain the discounted price.
Take advantage of the discountThe volume discount is based on the number of finalized stock orders on your account at the time a new order is processed. To take full advantage of the discount using an APSingle or POSingle account type, be sure to pay for existing orders before placing new ones (in this context providing us with a valid PO counts as paying).
Handling feesA BDSC handling fee is charged for each shipment based on destination:
Domestic shipment - $6.30
International shipment - $15.75
PostagePostage rates are based on the weight of stocks plus packaging. You can see the approximate weight of your shipment in this table. See the USPS website for domestic and international postage rates.
CourierCosts for courier service (see Shipping Methods on the Accounts & Users page) are variable. If you would like a rough estimate of a particular courier shipment method to your destination, then please contact us. You pay the actual cost of the service.
InsulationOptional recyclable package insulation can be selected at checkout and totals $17 per box. As the total number of stocks per box decreases due to the insulation, you may pay higher shipping costs. For international customers, you may incur additional customs fees due to multiple boxes. You can determine the approximate size of your box using this table. Currently available data suggests insulation does not have a significant impact (positive or negative) on shipment survival.
Import CostsImport costs such as duties, taxes and veterinary inspection fees vary by country and must be paid by your organization directly to the courier or relevant authorities.
International Shipping LimitsThe BDSC will not ship orders with stock fees greater than $2,475 to customers outside of the US. If your stock order will cost more than this amount (stock fees only) we will remove the highest stock numbers from your order until we reach a stock fee of less than $2,475. Please contact us if you have concerns about this before placing your order.
Risk of LossAlthough the great majority of stocks survive shipment, we cannot guarantee that your stocks will arrive alive. We share the risk of shipment loss with you by replacing any stock that dies in transit once without charging a stock or handling fee (DOA replacement). To qualify for a DOA, the original shipment must travel by courier (overnight courier within the USA). If the replacement shipment also dies in transit our normal charges will apply to additional orders for the lost stock or stocks. For more information see our Replacement policy.
Your fees are subsidizedGrant funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health covers ~20% of the cost of BDSC services. User fees cover the remaining costs of collecting, curating, maintaining, and distributing the collection. The BDSC is a non-profit organization housed within the Biology Department of Indiana University Bloomington.
